How to Prepare for Your Marriage License Appointment

Preparing in advance will help your marriage license appointment go smoothly. Here’s what you should know and bring before arriving.

Confirm That You Qualify

To receive a confidential California marriage license, both partners must:

  • Be at least 18 years old.

  • Be legally free to marry.

  • Be living together as spouses.

  • Attend the appointment together.

Bring Valid Photo Identification

Both partners must present valid, unexpired government-issued photo identification, such as a driver’s license, state identification card, or passport.

Expired identification cannot be accepted. If any required document is not in English, please let me know before your appointment because a certified English translation may be required.

Have Previous Marriage Information Ready

If either partner was previously married or in a registered domestic partnership, be prepared to provide the date and manner in which it ended.

If it ended within the last two years, certified documentation may be required. I’ll let you know what to bring when your appointment is confirmed.

Decide About a Name Change

Changing your name is optional. However, if either partner plans to select an eligible new middle or last name through the marriage license, decide before the appointment.

Once the license is issued, the selected new name generally cannot be added or changed on that license.

Choose Your Service

Before your appointment, decide whether you need:

  • A confidential marriage license only, or

  • A marriage license and simple wedding ceremony during the same appointment.

If you select the license-only service, you’ll take the license to the authorized officiant who will perform your ceremony.

If your appointment includes a ceremony, please let me know in advance if you would like to bring guests. Space is limited, and all guest counts must be approved beforehand.

Watch for Your Confirmation

Submitting an appointment request does not confirm your appointment. Once availability is determined, I’ll contact you with confirmation, the appointment location, and any additional instructions specific to your situation.

Most appointments take approximately 30 to 45 minutes. Your identification and information will be reviewed, the required paperwork will be completed, and your marriage license will be issued if all legal requirements are met.
